Description
An account of the resource
VHS Activism is based on collections of VHS tapes linked to themes like AIDS and Activism. Over the course of her career, Prof. Alexandra Juhasz collected hundreds of VHS tapes by film artists out of the mainstream of cinema. In some cases, these films are not commercially available. This collection is designed to bring together the digitizations of the tapes themselves with student-driven annotations, as well as records and references in other media, such as reviews, websites, and study guides. This project is part of the OER Pilot Project at Brooklyn College.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
With the December 10th, 1989 demonstration by ACT UP and WHAM! (Women's Health Action and Mobilization) at St. Patrick's Cathedral as its focus, Like a Prayer is more than a simple documentation of that event. This show explores the many issues that were cause for the action - as well as those resulting from it - while charting the course of events both inside and outside the church. Like a Prayer is composed of several sections including an analysis of the demonstration as it was portrayed in the mainstream media and reactions of Catholics who participated. Like a Prayer is a show of force and pride; a challenge to the Church and its policy on AIDS and reproductive rights. Produced by DIVA-TV in collaboration with WHAM!
Features cameo of Ray Navarro as Jesus.

An account of the resource
I made this video as an extracurricular activist project with students at Swarthmore College. Digitized for my VHS Archives class, Fall 2018. It's graphic sexual imagery, and de-coupling of sex and love, led to some protests by Christians, but otherwise it enjoyed a healthy self-distribution for many years to AIDS college educators across the US, its inteded use.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The film draws from a variety of sources: Hollywood spectacle, government propaganda, newsreels, memories of the living, and sprits of the dead, as well as Tajiri's own intuitions of a place she has never visited, but of which she has a memory. More than simply calling attention to the gaps in the story of the Japanese American internment, this important film raises questions about collective history - questions that prompt Tajiri to daringly re-imagine and re-create what has been stolen and what has been lost. <a href="https://brooklyn.kanopy.com/node/218578/preview" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">(Kanopy)</a>

<span>Acquired for research for my doctoral disseration, and then monograph, "<a href="http://alexandrajuhasz.com/books/aids-tv/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AIDS TV</a>." Ellen Spiro is a friend and fellow AIDS video activist videomaker and documentarian. I interview her in my documentary "Video Remains" (2005) as well as many other feminist lesbain AIDS activists who are also represented in my VHS collection: i.e. Juanita Mohammed Sczepanski, Alisa Lebow, and Sarah Schulman. I recently produced a short AIDS doc for Ellen (with Cheryl Dunye as director) "<a href="https://vimeo.com/245608251">DiAna's Hair Ego Remix</a>."<br /><br /><br /><br /></span>
