Digitized for my VHS Archives class, Fall 2018.<br /><br /><span>"This spectacular David and Goliath story unfolds on the streets of New York, as the first action of the Women’s Committee in ACT UP takes on </span><em>Cosmopolitan</em><span> magazine. In January of 1988 </span><em>Cosmo</em><span> published a dangerously misleading article on the transmission of AIDS for women. Written by psychiatrist Robert E. Gould, the article claimed that, “There is almost no danger of contracting AIDS through ordinary sexual [heterosexual] intercourse.” Jean Carlomusto documents the women who stood up to the mammoth magazine conglomerate and questioned Dr. Gould and his qualifications with perseverance, dedication, and bravery." <a href="https://www.moma.org/calendar/events/6364" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">(MoMA)</a></span>

Acquired for research for my doctoral disseration, then monograph, <a href="http://alexandrajuhasz.com/books/aids-tv/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AIDS TV.</a> My friend and colleague and fellow AIDS video activist, Tom Kalin, worked as a producer on the films made by AIDS Films. I write about him and them in an early essay on AIDS video, "So Many Alternatives." On a quirky, you can't make this up note. I had been trying to get permission to digitize their amazing tapes for several years, but my emails weren't reaching the project's producer. I sat next to him on a plane, and he granted permission then and there.

<span>Carolee was one of the subjects of <a href="http://alexandrajuhasz.com/books/women-of-vision/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Women of Vision</a>. She gave this and other tapes of her film and video work to me for B-roll. I recently re-interviewed her when she had a major retrospective in NYC at PS1. I went to her house upstate and had a memorable day: interview, meal, and she gave me three pairs of shoes (we have the same shoe size!) which I love to walk in. I published an homage to her, Barbara Hammer, and Agnes Varda after their deaths in <a href="https://hyperallergic.com/617414/for-feminist-artists-recognition-often-comes-too-late/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hyperallegic</a>, and also in the <a href="https://online.ucpress.edu/fmh/article-abstract/5/4/1/109521/Editors-IntroductionInformed-Historical-Reveries?redirectedFrom=fulltext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Feminist Media Histories</a> special issue.</span>
