Description

This dub was a gift to me from another Professor at Pitzer so that I could use it to teach women's and feminist film. Not sure I ever did. However, when I was editing my newest video, "Please Hold," in March 2024 as part of their amazing Film/Video editing Residency, I had the great fortune to see a show on Malador also at the Wexner Center for the Arts, Sarah Malador: Tri-continental Cinema.

Abstract

"Sambizanga has a sensual aesthetic, conveyed through scenes of everyday life: the couple Maria and Domingos, Maria’s long journeys on foot along dusty tracks, with the mist rising up from the ground, and Maria’s relationship with the child she carries on her back, who is cared for by other women when she stays with friends." (Il Cinema Ritrovato)
This revolutionary bombshell by Sarah Maldoror chronicles the awakening of Angola’s independence movement. Based on a true story, Sambizanga follows a young woman as she makes her way from the outskirts of Luanda toward the city’s center looking for her husband after his arrest by the Portuguese authorities—an incident that will ultimately help to ignite a national uprising. Featuring a cast of nonprofessionals—many of whom were themselves involved in anticolonial resistance—this landmark work of political cinema honors the essential roles of women, as well as the hardships they endure, in the global struggle for liberation.
