Description

Gift from filmmaker. Barbara was a friend and colleague, inspiration and radical. A lesbian experimental filmmaker, teacher, and activist, she made work for decades, as queer, lesbian, feminist, and AIDS activism transformed. She was a subject of my film and book, Women of Vision, a history of feminist film and media, and gave me tapes to use as b-roll. I subsequently interviewed her again, many years later, as she enjoyed a solo show at the Leslie Lohman Gay and Lesbian Gallery in NY. After her death, I published a piece in Hyperallergic where I considered why such attention is so late in coming for feminist/queer filmmakers.

Abstract

“Renowned documentarian and filmmaker Barbara Hammer has crafted an eloquent and richly layered examination of the artist’s and individual’s role in times of conflict. Resisting Paradise focuses on Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard’s artistic work in the south of France during World War II, while also examining the word of Matisse’s family and others in the French Resistance Movement.”
