Title
History and Memory: (for Akiko and Takashige); Scar; Smoke and Ghosts: Three Poems and more [Through the Lens 5 Compilation]
Subject
woman filmmaker, documentary, history, experimental, Asian-American, Japanese internment, feminist
Description
A film I taught with and still do because of Tajiri's amazing mix of documentary, fiction, history, art, and feminism. It always moves students to understand the necessity of experimental approaches to political history. It seems to be recorded from an on air program called Through the Lens 5. I was not aware that these other works were on this tape until I digitized it.
Creator
Recorded from the airwaves: Through the Lens 5.
Date
1991; 1993; 1994
Abstract
The film draws from a variety of sources: Hollywood spectacle, government propaganda, newsreels, memories of the living, and sprits of the dead, as well as Tajiri's own intuitions of a place she has never visited, but of which she has a memory. More than simply calling attention to the gaps in the story of the Japanese American internment, this important film raises questions about collective history - questions that prompt Tajiri to daringly re-imagine and re-create what has been stolen and what has been lost.
