Krystal Valentin
Love guides me in all areas of my life, including career, academic, and artistic pursuits.
Love is a radical act, and informs my involvement with academic research, archives, art history, and cultural heritage institutions.
As an art historian-in-training, I’m interested in analyzing queer relationships to historical art, particularly meaning-making/the evolution and transformation of historical artworks’ meanings over time as they relate to queerness.
As an archivist-in-training, I am interested in preserving the physical and digital materials documenting the histories of minoritized groups so that they remain discoverable and accessible for generations.
I have experience working as a museum educator at the New-York Historical Society and volunteering as a digital archivist for Alexandra Juhasz’s VHS Activism Archive at Brooklyn College.
As a volunteer digital archivist with the VHS Activism Archives, I’ve taken a leadership role in physically and digitally organizing a collection of nearly 200 VHS tapes; coordinating and executing steps to complete the archiving process; documenting project progress; retrieving, documenting, and standardizing metadata; establishing a naming convention for files; and digitizing tapes.
I am a multimedia artist.
As an art-maker, my creations are all informed by love beyond hierarchies and relationships — to ourselves, each other, the natural world, and the past. My propensity for multimedia art and utilization of mediums as varied as ink, leaves, and audio, are as pivotal to the meaning-making as the subjects themselves. I draw inspiration from music, literature, the natural world, anatomy, historical art, my personal life, dreams, and my communities.
I am a digital designer.
I am concerned about communicating information to the masses in a way that is captivating, effective, and accessible. I draw inspiration, in design and other areas of my life, from the art nouveau ethos of beauty and functionality for all.
